We're furring out!
Furring out, not freaking out.
When the carpenter furrs out, he puts plywood strips on the studs.
We're furring out because the plaster and lathe was an inch thick. The drywall we are about to hang is a half an inch thick. If we don't fur out, that half an inch difference will be visible at every door jam, and behind every piece of original trim we put back up. We didn't want ugly gaps to mar our beautiful woodwork.
The woodwork is what makes the house.
The woodwork is a huge part of why we bought the house.
The studs in old houses are not always even. Wavy studs could mean wavy drywall. We don't want wavy drywall. Some of the furring strips are handcrafted to create an even surface to hang the drywall on.
We are looking forward to hanging drywall.... delays.... too many delays.
